What Is a CDFA®?

If you’re going through a divorce, or even just thinking about it, you’ve probably already talked to an attorney. Maybe you’ve been referred to a mediator. But there’s one person who is almost never on that list, and her absence can cost you more than you realize.

That person is a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst®, a CDFA®. A divorce financial analyst CDFA® focuses on the financial aspects of divorce.

Most women I talk to have never heard that title before. And honestly? That’s not their fault. Most divorces happen without one. But I truly believe that’s one of the biggest reasons so many women walk away from divorce without the outcome they deserved.

So let me explain what a CDFA® actually is, and more importantly, what it means for you.

Your attorney handles the law. A CDFA® handles the numbers.

A Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® is a financial professional with specialized training in the financial complexities of divorce, and the designation is earned through the Institute by completing the required certification path, including an exam, a bachelor's degree with three years of relevant experience or, in some cases, five years of relevant experience, plus several years of industry background and ongoing education. To maintain that certification, professionals also complete divorce related continuing education every two years. We work alongside your attorney, not instead of them. Your attorney is doing an important job. But their job is the legal process. Our job is providing expertise and financial expertise in divorce related financial matters so that when you’re sitting at that table making decisions, you actually understand what those decisions mean for your financial future.

Most women, when they come to me, don’t know what their full financial picture looks like. Many clients have not yet gathered complete financial disclosures, so they don’t have a clear view of all assets, income, and expenses early in the divorce process. They don’t know what he has. They don’t know what a 50/50 split is even going to look like in real numbers. And they are so overwhelmed by just the thought of the finances that their brain can’t think past right now.

That’s exactly where I come in. Early financial analysis can save time and money by helping you make informed decisions about asset division, spousal support, and child support.

What a CDFA® actually does for you

A CDFA® helps you gather and understand all of the financial documents involved in your marriage and turn them into real financial analysis, so you can evaluate property, retirement accounts, investments, and whether keeping the marital home or family home truly makes sense. We look at the full picture together, not just the obvious stuff.

We also help you understand the financial impact of the decisions you’re about to make so any settlement is based on reality, not assumptions. A divorce settlement that seems fair at first glance can look very different once we compare settlement options and various options over time. We also look at tax implications tied to asset division, including costs like capital gains, so you know what you would actually keep. A CDFA® makes sure you’re not walking into an agreement without knowing what you’re actually agreeing to.

We can project how today’s choices may affect you 5, 10, or 20 years from now, which helps you plan around your financial goals and your next chapter of life. That clarity can also support negotiations and mediation by helping both parties make informed decisions about shared debts and support while keeping the process neutral, and in contested cases some CDFAs® may offer expert testimony.

And for those of us who are also Certified Financial Planners, we don’t hand you off when the divorce is final. We stay with you as both a financial planner and guide for financial planning, helping you build a post-divorce budget and a plan for future life. We help you step boldly into your next financial chapter, with a real plan and real confidence.

Why this matters more than most women know

Divorce is isolating. It’s overwhelming. And the stakes could not be higher. Hiring a CDFA® can feel like an additional expense, but that expertise often helps you avoid costly mistakes and reduce conflict. A CDFA® can also be a valuable part of a divorce team alongside your attorney and mediator. Most women go through it without anyone truly in their corner. Not just someone who understands the law, but someone who understands the numbers, the fear, and what’s actually at stake.

You are stronger and more capable than you feel right now. But you shouldn’t have to figure all of this out alone.

That’s the whole reason I do this.
